“This is a resource for and about Affirming Ministries. Affirming Ministries are congregations, presbyteries, Conferences, educational institutions, and other ministries within the United Church that publicly declare their commitment to inclusion and justice for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Although Affirming Ministries make an explicit statement about issues of sexuality and gender, their commitment to justice is far broader.They continually grow and change as they seek to live more fully into God’s way of welcome, love, and justice for all creation. Just as God rejoices in the goodness and
diversity of creation, so too Affirming Ministries honour and celebrate diversity.” (from the Introduction section)
A planning group appointed by the Visioning and Critical Reflection Committee of the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario has been hard at work producing and collecting material and resources that will assist worship, celebration, education and encouragement to the churches of our Conference on their road to becoming Affirming!
The material, approved by the Conference Executive, is called “Let’s sing a rainbow” and includes the following:
* Story telling
People’s true stories and experiences of being welcomed/included
* Material for worship
Complete orders of worship (with or without Holy Communion) including a bulletin for print as well as PowerPoint which concentrates on celebrating 25 years of welcoming the ministry of everyone
* Fun Activities
For all ages – to help involve people of all ages
* Information and resources
To encourage congregations to become affirming.
To assist congregations to begin conversations on becoming affirming as well as to assess how affirming they are.
All these resources are available on a website for easy, free download and are fully customizable to your own needs, eg. use only a portion of the worship service, the prayers, or activities during worship or a meeting.
The “Let’s Sing a Rainbow” website will be expanded in the future to include other resources like videos, a photo gallery and some stories from various congregations about their journey to becoming affirming. If your congregation does not have access to the “Sing-a Rainbow” website, a CD with all the resources will be made available to all the congregations in our Conference through their Presbyteries. Additional CDs can be ordered through the website.
We hope you will find these resources helpful as you encourage your congregation in its journey to become Affirming, or as you inspire your congregation to take the first steps to becoming Affirming.
